Who Is Ready For A SpaceUp in St. Louis!

I am so excited about all the great things that are on the move in the Space Industry as a whole. In my last post on LinkedIn I posted the announcement of  XCOR Aerospace new test pilot.

Ill let you in on a little secrete, Well last week TBA but SpaceUp Saint Louis is making plans on hosting the first SpaceUp un-confrence here in Saint Louis. 

For those of you who are not familiar with the SpaceUp un-conferences, they have become very popular lately all around the globe.

Place like Europe, Saudi Arabia, and North America, These un-confrences have been creating a big buzz in the bar-camp scenes. I myself have never attended a SpaceUp but I am on the organizing committee for SpaceUp Saint Louis.

 

So what is a un-confrence?

 I get this a lot from people when I mention un-confrence, basically it's not a conference. Well not it the way you will traditionally think. This is how SpaceUp.org defined it.

SpaceUp is a space unconference, where participants decide the topics, schedule, and structure of the event. Unconferences have been held about technology, science, transit, and even cupcakes, but this is the first one focused on space exploration.

What I like most about what I have researched is that they have these five minute T minus 5 talks, similar to the ignite format. The speakers get 5 minutes to talk, with 20 different slides, that they don't control. That has to be fun & interesting.

So when is the event?

It hasn't been officially announce but SpaceUp Saint Louis does have a Facebook page up so go there like them and follow there feeds its soon TBA.

I have been following XCOR Aerospace since last year after attending Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference. I was excited to know they were gearing up, along with a few other companies, to provide suborbital space flights for microgravity-research and tourism. This could have not came at a better time for the space industry as a whole. Since the end of NASA space shuttle program in 2011, the era for space travel and exploration seemed unclear.

In the past space travel and research has always been experienced by only a handful of human elites. That is to say "If you wasn't part of  NASA or any other government space program, you did not participate in space". The game has been changing slowly lately after numerous of  opportunities surrounding space has come available. From space challenges hosted by The X-Prize Foundation, opportunities for researchers in  NASA Flight Opportunities Program, and now private companies like XCOR who are taking the lead and building a future platform and model for the suborbital industry.

I also had the pleasure talking with old colleagues and new mover and shakers in the suborbital research and travel industry. Mr Edward Wright with United States Rocket Academy was one of them. Ed Wright Citizens in Space program helps educators and researchers, in placing their payloads in space. Another part of the project includes citizens as astronauts, to act as operators for experiments.

Old Friends & New Faces

The best part of all was the meetings with old colleagues and friends, like Dr Sean Casey with Silicone Valley Space Research Center (left photo middle) who himself is a leader in the suborbital industry. Last year after launching one of the first unheard of commercial suborbital conference in Silicone Valley, Ca. Dr Casey feature some of the 

industry most well respected professionals on the panel.
